Where is the Lab-Grown Diamond Industry Today?

ELGA Jewelry - Transparent Sustainability

"All manufacturing processes result in emissions. Offsetting your emissions, does not make the production process ‘zero-emission’."

In the creation of lab-grown diamonds, the process involves heating feedstock gases in a reactor to temperatures akin to the sun. Acknowledging the inherent energy demand, we prioritize transparency in our sustainability efforts, avoiding the practice of 'greenwashing.'

While we don't claim 'zero-emission,' we openly share our greenhouse gas emissions details, emphasizing our commitment to reducing and mitigating environmental impact.

Our approach involves using renewable energy for the diamond growth phase, and Polish Phase the most energy-intensive aspect of our process, coupled with offset initiatives to address any remaining emissions responsibly.

Understanding our Emissions

We understand the full lifecycle emissions of our lab-grown diamond manufacturing, from cradle to factory gate.

This means everything from the raw materials, manufacturing and energy consumption up to and including the finished polished stone and all its transportation in between.

What does it take to Make a ELGA Superior Lab-Grown Diamond?

On average in 2022, a polished carat of lab-grown diamond produced:

Carbon Footprint

On average, every carat produced 35 kgCO2e of emissions. That’s comparable to producing a pair of Jeans

Energy

On average, every carat required 228 kWh to grow. That’s comparable to 7 days of electricity consumption of a typical US/Canada home.

Our Commitment to our Future Sustainability

We’re committing to reducing our emissions annually. As a next step, we want to look at the environmental impact of our jewelry as well as our stones.

We use renewable energy already – but our focus is on reducing the amount of energy overall, because even renewable energy consumption has an environmental impact, and diamond synthesis is energy intensive with a clear plan for our future sustainability and reducing our emissions over the next 10 years to become Carbon neutral.

The Future

This is just the beginning of our sustainability commitment, and we promise to keep being open and honest about our progress, and bring you with us on the journey.
