Diamond carat

What is diamond carat?

Carat serves as the unit of measurement for the physical weight of diamonds, accurately gauged using a precise digital scale where one carat corresponds to 0.20 grams.

It's crucial to clarify that diamond carat primarily measures a stone's weight rather than its size. The appearance of two seemingly identical stones may differ in weight, especially if one possesses a deeper cut, indicating more diamond below its top surface. Furthermore, diamonds of the same weight but different shapes can give the impression of distinct sizes based on their surface dimensions and depth.

Settings play a role in influencing a diamond's visual impact. For instance, our classic halo setting features a 'halo' of small lab-grown diamonds encircling the central stone, enhancing the overall visual allure of the primary lab-grown diamond.

Contrary to common misconceptions, a larger carat weight doesn't inherently equate to a "better" diamond, as carat weight doesn't directly correlate with sparkle. The brilliance of a diamond results from outstanding clarity and precision cutting, optimizing light interaction with the facets of the stone. This principle holds true across all carat weights, ensuring that even the smallest diamonds exhibit their unique and dazzling sparkle.

About diamond carat pricing

The pricing of diamonds at The ELGA is influenced by various factors, with larger carat weights, exceptional cut, clarity, and color contributing to an exponential increase in value due to their inherent rarity. In the natural diamond realm, higher carat weights often involve cutting from larger rough crystals, which are inherently more challenging to source compared to their smaller counterparts, rendering them rare in nature.

The rarity of larger crystals is further heightened when combined with the other four C's — achieving a colorless stone with minimal inclusions, leading to excellent clarity when cut.

Distinguishing itself from natural diamonds, the pricing of ELGA lab-grown diamonds follows a different model. Each batch of lab-grown diamonds from The ELGA is produced to a consistent standard of cut, color, and clarity. As a result, the pricing for carat weight remains linear at 1000 CAD per carat. By eliminating 'rarity' as a pricing factor, The ELGA makes larger carat weights more accessible and affordable without compromising on the quality of cut, color, and clarity.

What does total carat weight mean?

Total carat weight is the measured weight of all the diamonds in any given piece combined. Any time you see ct.tw after a number in our product descriptions, this refers to the total weight of the combined lab-grown diamonds in one of our pieces. The individual weight of all the lab-grown diamonds included is then listed separately in the product description.
